Richard Staat graduated from The Ohio State University with a BFA degree. For 35 years he worked as a commercial artist before moving to Oak Island where he paints in his studio nearly every day. Richard’s paintings are exhibited in the Franklin Square Gallery in Southport and the Sunset River Market Place in Callabash. His work can be found in public and private collections throughout the country. Several of his paintings are in the permanent collection in the Brunswick County Court House. He teaches a weekly watercolor class in the Franklin Square Gallery and has given workshops for the Oak Island Art Guild and the Wilmington Art Association. Richard belongs to the Central Ohio Watercolor Society; the Associated Artists of Southport: the Oak Island Art Guild and is a signature member of the Watercolor Society of North Carolina. He has won many National, State wide, regional and local awards for his WC paintings. “Notice that I paint using pure transparent water colors. The white of the paper is reserved... no opaques are used. This requires a great deal of planning before that first brush stroke is applied to the paper. Look for a sense of humor in my work.I like to take a different point of view when I paint. Skies don’t always have to be blue, trees green or shadows black .”
